Karrinyup’s NAIDOC Week Steeped in Tradition
Every year, Australians celebrate NAIDOC Week and the 2022 edition gave staff and visitors at Karrinyup Shopping Centre a reason to come together to recognize and learn about the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For the occasion, the mall’s center court morphed into an artisanal workshop.
Be they long-time hobbyists or first-timers eager to discover a new craft, all guests were invited to try their hand at traditional basket weaving with the help of expert Emma-Jane Hunt and leaf painting with Justin Martin before eating their way through native bush food tastings with Wild Food Woman, Jo Rhodes, a homeopath and plant forager. It was a doorway leading them toward more cultural awareness and stronger community ties.
