Layton Hills Mall incorporated non-traditional Santas into its holiday set. Five Santas—traditional, frontier, Victorian, Old World, and Father Christmas—alternated daily from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. Shoppers were receptive: photo sales increased 26 percent over the prior year.

Hansen Planetarium set up an exhibit at ZCMI Center during National Space Week. For spending $50 in the center, shoppers could receive a ticket as a gift-with-purchase. Mall traffic was up, and the Planetarium achieved increased public awareness.

Hampton Towne Centre celebrated its 17-year anniversary by unveiling its new branding and hosting a Home Show. Richard Karn (“Al”) and Pamela Anderson (“Lisa”) of TV’s Home Improvement made appearances and signed autographs.

Woodland Mall’s Kids Club program, based on a preferred shopper card for children, offers members discounts or special offers in over half of the center’s stores. A Kids Clubhouse was developed to add fun for the children, and give parents free time to shop.

Mall of America sought to drive early weekday traffic with its “Two for Tuesday” promotion. 25 percent of merchants participated, and Tuesday traffic and sales were increased.

Each April, Canal Place Shopping Centre transforms from a high-end fashion center into a spectacular greenhouse. Sales went up 25% over this 11-day Primavera (“first green”) event.

Villa Linda Mall’s “100 Percent Off Holiday Sale” saw 2,500 customers receive a mock checkbook containing five 20% off coupons, to be used over four days.

Apache Plaza gave back-to-school shoppers a chance to unlock a prize locker and win the contents each day. Back-to-school sales increased by 28 percent.

Santa’s arrival at Hickory Hollow Mall was an unforgettable experience, thanks to his six live reindeer on-scene. Such a large crowd was drawn that the food court ran out of food, and recorded sales were up more than 25 percent.

Pet photos with Santa proved to be lucrative for Moorestown Mall, bringing in more than double the entire day’s sales in just one evening.
