AMP Breaks Ground with Bayfair Project

AMP Capital Shopping Centres has taken another step toward making its Bayfair expansion project a reality. Yesterday, the Australian developer got the green light for its revamped A$115 million (US$87.5m) Bayfair center in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. Its team celebrated with an official blessing and groundbreaking ceremony.

“Bayfair serves an important role in the wider community as a major shopping destination in the region, which is experiencing significant economic and population growth and huge seasonal surges in tourism. As the region grows, we want to grow with it, and the development is part of future-proofing for that growth,” noted center manager, Steve Ellingford.

The Master Plan

  • Schedule: Stages opening pre-Christmas 2018 and a completion target of Q3 2019
  • Size: The center will be expanded by 9,000 sq.m. (96,875 sq.ft.) to a total of 42,000 sq.m. (452,084 sq.ft.)
  • Tenants: approximately 50 specialty stores, including an environmentally friendly Countdown supermarket and a strong fashion mix new to both the center and the Bay of Plenty region
  • Number of car parking spaces: 1,820, which represents an additional 200 spots
  • Cycle parking
  • United Cinemas “Grand Theatre,” The Bay of Plenty’s largest movie complex with seven screens, more than 1,300 seats, and a Dolby Atmos digital sound system
  • F&B offering: Integrated alfresco dining precinct, with up to seven restaurants and casual food eateries that will include licensed operators such as the Little Creatures craft beer brewery

Besides its enhanced retail mix, Bayfair will also unveil new community-focused amenities. Among them are fresh family facilities, including a quiet room for children with sensory processing disorders such as autism.
